The water toward the ground was always cooler than the levels closer to the top, but he didn't mind it so much. If you wanted to find anything good, you had to work for it.
Unear was somewhere a few miles from Anastas, and today he was looking for sunken treasure. Judging from the light filtering in from up to he'd been at this for about half the day. Friggin' elves, you'd think they'd leave behind more shit with all the stuff they carry on their boats. So far all he'd netted were a few arrowheads, a very rusty chain-belt, and a some interesting shells.
None of this crap was going to net him enough credit to buy anything on the trading routes. With the tide up it was almost harder to find "lost" items: nobody was walking the spotty paths between the islands, so there wasn't a way to flounder out onto the road and scare them half to death. Stupid... two-leggers.
A glint off a scale caught his golden eye, and the male's moment of stillness was over. With a whip of his thick fin he pulled his arms into his sides, silently weaving through the blue and sinking slightly to get underneath...
SNAP
...A decent-sized redfish. Holding the writhing thing in one hand, thin lips pulled back to allow razor teeth to sever its head in one quick bite. Chewing happily on his meal he rotated skyward, swaying his lower half to make a lazy trip to the sunnier part of the sea.

Today had been a relatively good day hunting for treasure for the little Acayia. Despite being so close to the Anastas territory of the elves which still terrified the blue scaled mermaid, her curiosity and love for their jewels tempted her to get close to the island, which proved to be rewarding. A webbed hand reached down between a few rocks and brought up a shiny red jewel that glittered from the rays of sunlight that beamed down into the water. Bright purple eyes studied the gem, before a light giggle ran through the depths of the ocean. The gem was stored into a leather bound bag strapped over a shoulder, and the webbed creature swam on.
The one swimming around with a petite mermaid by the name of Aquene. Everything about the girl screamed innocent. Even at her age, she swam up and down and with the charismatic of a child, as though she were skipping her way through the sea. Her skin was glittered with bright blue scales, though if one looked closer they could see they were a wide array of blues, purples, and greens, even a few golds and silvers if she was in range of sunlight. Half her hair was held back in a large loop, the rest flowing freely. If it were let down, it would have been as long as the end of her tail. Her eyes were large and the color of light purple, sparkling with the innocence that thrived in her heart. The only articles of clothing she wore was the violet shells tied together on her chest, and a small gold bracelet with purple gems. Her tail was that of a female betta, a wide range of blues and violets.
Aquene hardly thought of consequences now as she swam in the safety of her water home so close to the islands, her thoughts only on the jewels that somehow got lost from their owners up above, waiting to be found. She knew her brother was bound to worry, for how absentminded and oblivious to danger she could be, but he just didn't understand. Her collection needed more, and the only way to get the best items way to get close to the dangerous strange legged beings up above. But even Tidal knew she wouldn't dare go up above. At least, not anymore.
Looking up, Aquene gave a small sigh at the realization she had been out past the worry time her brother kept in his head. He would be out looking for her soon. She'd better start heading back. The Acayia looked longingly towards the rocks that surrounded the island before turning and headed back.
It wasn't too long though before something caught her eyes, and she looked down at the sparkle in the darker depths. A large smile crossed her lips, completely forgetting her plans of going home, and dove down, not even realizing there was another fishlike creature so close to her. What could possibly be dangerous for her to worry about after all.

There was something interesting about the water that Unear had learned two-leggers didn't know about: Not even the werewolves could really get it. Water carried everything. Scent, sound, objects, people; the Acayias could find anything close by. And with his nose so finely tuned, he could go that extra step...further.
Right now, for example, the water nearest to him was full of the strong scent of fish blood, coppery and mouth-wateringly pungent. If he was lucky, it might attract a few more snacks his way. If he was unlucky, it'd probably bring a damn shark or a squid or something. Not that they'd be that much of a problem, he just didn't want to deal with it.
Something else was coming closer though, and it smelled female. Well, this could be fun, it was a half-heartedly curious thought. On his lazy, angled rise to the surface, the blue belly-scales of said female came into view several yards above him and a bit to the left. Again, fangy teeth bared themselves, but this time in a grin before he tore another piece off his rapidly disappearing meal. All she was wearing was essentially a shell-bra, and she was what, hardly out of being a kid? K, so, I'm not wearing anything, but still. Jesus.
One full whip of his body and the bubbles flowed past him, the slight webbing between his fingers pulling some water away as he held the redifsh in his green-tinted jaws. Golden eyes had spotted the target: she had a lot of hair. Girly-girl. And a full leather pouch. Had she been out here dumpster-diving too?
Banking right, down and then back up, the grim male planned to float up just a few feet in front of Betta Girl as she sunk down. "Got a full bag, I see," By now the last third of his fish was almost bloodless and floating lazily by his chest. Lazy smirk revealed a few of his teeth, now stained a dark crimson. His voice was a vibration in the waves, a scratchy hiss undertone. "What'd you do, hunt the shore?"

The young woman should have been able to smell the presence of another Acayia a mile away at least. She should have known if anyone was coming near her, to prepare herself. But she was an innocent creature, and with it came the consequence of ignoring her senses when distracted. Aquene kept diving down, oblivious to the fact someone was swimming right at her, someone who her brother would have labeled as dangerous without a second thought about it. The huge smile was still planted on her face as she dove down, until the man came into the view of her large light violet eyes.
Aquene's arms sailed out in front of her to halt her pursuit, and a small squeak of surprise escaped her lips when she saw him. At first it was only because she hadn't realized she wasn't alone.. then the fear sank into her chest when she saw the creature. He was gangly looking, with a color of what she thought of as decaying flesh. He also smelled of blood, indicating he just ate a meal, which sent a small shive down the girl's spine. Her three tipped finned ears arched down for a moment in her discomfort, before covering her emotions. It was rude after all.
She couldn't help though but clutch at her bag a little tighter when he compliment at her find. Aquene did try to offer a small smile in friendliness, but is disappeared as soon as he bared his pointed teeth, her heart making a hard thump at the coloration from his meal. She swallowed and braved for words.
"N-No. I-I- I wouldn't go near the surface." She uttered out after some difficulty, pushing some of her thick hair away from her face with a shaking webbed hand. Unlike his hiss of a tone, her voice was sweet as candy despite the stutters from her fear. She finally placed a little smile on her lips as she looked at her bag. "I-I was closer than normal today though. T-There was a lot of stuff today."

Clearly nobody's taught the poor kid how to brake. The flat statement in his mind was enough to get his thin lip twitching. Okay, so she wasn't really a kid, she was maybe a few years his junior. But she acted like a kid, and the way her eyes widened to the size of a human battle shield...it was damn funny.
It took her long enough to figure out he was there, but she was at least able to mask her emotions fairly fast. It didn't pay to be sweet to strangers, especially if she had been near the shore. Quickest way to end up suffocating on the beach, or as some two-legger's dinner. Unear could easily imagine her mother wagging a finger and scolding her when she got home. But boy, is she going to have a story to tell today.
"Nnn." It was a quick sound of acknowledgment - because, as she was talking, deadly jaws opened and snapped up the last bit of his fish, filling his mouth with the remains and chewing quickly. Hard eyes gazed at the bag with mild interest. Either way, someone was going to leave here with something today - whether it was info or a new shiny thing. "Whudya fin-" Swallowed, cleared his throat.
"What'd you find, huh?" Wiry arms hoisted up his own bag, only the bottom of it filled. "Looks to me, girly, like you went a loooot closer'n I did." Girly. Well, there was no sense in completely traumatizing her. Long, webbed hand was extended out. "Name's Unear. What's yours?"
